Carrickfergus Central Primary School Trim Trail

Carrickfergus Central Primary School is a co-educational controlled primary school which opened in February 1953.  The school recognises the value of experience beyond the classroom and they have a thriving PTA who make a valuable contribution towards the school.  Through the fundraising efforts of the PTA and grant applications the school added a fantastic trim trail and RecoBox to their outdoor play facility.

We were delighted to work with Nuala Hall and Nicola Lowry on this project.  They were interested to develop an outdoor area which would suit children of all ages.  They wanted to develop their existing sensory garden so the introduction of the RecoBox provided an outdoor / indoor area for the kids.  With the habitat panels on the front and sides the children can do their bug investigations, teachers can incorporate stem using the RecoBox and so much more.  The sensory panels to the side of the RecoBox will prove beneficial to kids with special needs and in the future, it could be used as a break away space.  Internally it can be developed as a sensory area which would also prove beneficial. It will be interesting to hear how Carrickfergus Central will develop their RecoBox.  The trim trail within the playground will help develop the children’s fine and gross motor skills.  It is multi-functional and caters for all children from 4 right up to 11. The trim trail comprises of balancing beams, stepping pods, wobble bridge, monkey bars, tightrope, balancing barrel and much more. We installed the trim trail on tarmac and then finished it off with a very natural looking jungle mulch surface.  This surface gives the look of bark, but its large rubber granules bounded together to make a solid soft surface. We have no doubt a Rota will be needed so that everyone gets a turn.
